EMPIRE™ is good in the shade and keeps a good winter colour. It can generally outcompete the weeds once established. EMPIRE™ ZOYSIA generally requires less watering & less mowing than any other commercially grown lawn in Australia.
Good Winter Colour
EMPIRE™ ZOYSIA has good winter colour when compared to other more common turf.
Tough and Hardwearing
EMPIRE™ ZOYSIA has excellent fast growth across the ground. Its runners are fast and highly branching, which provides excellent recovery from wear. EMPIRE ZOYSIA is quickly becoming known as the tough, hardwearing turf.
Less Mowing
Although EMPIRE™ ZOYSIA grows across the ground at a fast rate, its upwards leaf growth is less than most other commercially grown lawns in Australia. It grows fast across the ground for better wear tolerance, but one that grows more slowly upwards for less mowing.
Great at Out Competing Weeds
Once EMPIRE™ ZOYSIA is well established, its dense growth makes it much harder for weeds to establish.
Salt Tolerance
EMPIRE™ ZOYSIA has excellent salt tolerance. It thrives near the coast and is good at tolerating salt spray.
Less Thatch, Less Scalping
EMPIRE™ ZOYSIA is known for its ability to create a dense sward without major thatch problems. EMPIRE™ ZOYSIA has less thatch and less scalping than any other zoysia.
Disease & Pest Tolerance
EMPIRE™ ZOYSIA is very resistant to turf diseases and pests and will generally not show symptoms of most common disease and pest problems that plague other turf varieties. It is especially resistant to lawn grubs that cause big problems to many other lawn types. NOTE: Empire is more lawn grub resistant than other turf types, but this does not mean it is immune to lawn grub. If symptoms similar to lawn grub are present, consult with your lawn care professional.
Shade Tolerance
EMPIRE™ ZOYSIA performs well in full sun, but also will tolerate moderate shade.
Empire is recommended for up to 50% shade in areas with low wear and up to 30% shade in areas with moderate to high wear.
Avoid heavy or concentrated use of new Empire Zoysia lawn for the first 2 -3 weeks to give the roots an opportunity to firmly knit with soil and to ensure that the turf will remain smooth.
Watering during establishment period:
Week 1: Water twice a day, preferably morning and afternoon.
Week 2: Water once a day but watering should be longer to encourage the roots to search deeper.
Week 3: Water 2 – 3 times per week.
Mowing:
The first mow usually takes place in week 6. To make sure that your new lawn is ready, try lifting one corner of a turf slab. If it lifts you will need to wait a bit longer. Once established Empire Zoysia will only need mowing every 3-4 weeks.
The first rule of thumb to keep in mind when mowing your Empire Zoysia lawn, is that mowing height matters! Never mow off more than 1/3 of leaf at a one time. Depending on the look that you like you can mow your Empire Zoysia lawn as low as 25mm for a manicured look or up to 35-45mm for a lush carpet effect. During the hot, dry days of summer, it’s a good policy to let your grass grow just a little bit longer, so raise the mower height a little more than usual and your lawn will be better able to survive those summer scorchers.
Watering:
Once established Empire Zoysia will require watering only when needed during hot spells and windy periods. Empire Zoysia is drought tolerant and will handle long dry periods bouncing back quickly after rain.
Dethatching:
We recommend dethatching your Empire Zoysia lawn every 2nd or 3rd spring. This can be achieved by mowing very short at the start of spring and collecting the clippings off the lawn or hiring a dethatching machine from your local equipment hire outlet.
Fertilising:
Empire Zoysia only requires two (2) fertilises per year at the start of autumn and winter. If you would like a very deep green colour throughout the year you can fertilise at the start of each season though this will increase the frequency of mowing required. We recommend a slow release fertiliser.
Pests:
Empire Zoysia is extremely pest resistant though if you do get lawn pests such as the dreaded lawn grub or curl grub you need to get onto this immediately. The easiest way to rid yourself of these is the Amgrow Patrol Lawn & Beetle Pest Control, a granular product that controls lawn grubs, beetles, ants, earwigs, millipedes, mole crickets and slaters. It is safe to use on lawn or in garden beds.
Alternatively, you can use Lawn Lovers Grub Guard 2L. This premium pest control for lawns has an easy spray-on applicator that means you don’t need to handle any granulated chemicals or poisons or endanger breathing in any residue dusts.
Weeds:
We believe that prevention is always better than a cure. If your lawn is kept healthy the weeds will struggle to establish. If you do have any weeds take hold, including bindi, clover, cudweed or thistles, we do recommend All Purpose Weed Control to rid yourself of them.
