What Weed is it Wednesday!?

Today we are talking Mullumbimby Couch (Botanical name: Cyperus brevifolius)

  • Mullumbimby couch is a grass-like weed of the sedge family that grows year round. It is easily recognised by its bright green leaves, triangular shaped cross section and tall flowering stems that can reach up to 40cm tall
  • Mullumbimby couch produces characteristic seed-heads 6-7mm long with 3 or 4 leafy bracts at the base and contain numerous flower spikelets. Its ‘seeds’ are yellow to reddish brown in colour.
  • It prefers damp and shady locations and flourishes in the wet – particularly this La Niña season!!
  • Caution if mowing Mullumbimby couch when it is flowering as this can spread the weed further and accelerate its growth in your yard. Similar to nutgrass (another member of the sedge family) if you spot Mullumbimby couch in your yard – act quickly to prevent its spread. Its complicated root system can make it difficult to eradicate by hand.
  • The Lawnshop at Turfworks sells Sedgehammer which will not only control Mullumbimby couch but as discussed on last weeks what weed is it Wednesday, it will control nutgrass as well without affecting your lawn. Remember to always follow the manufacturers instructions on the pack.
